Target Audience: This will be a talk targeted at physicians considering non-clinical careers.

I will discuss the difference between the for-profit and not-for-profit health insurers and discuss how working at a smaller, non-profit plan offers a nice balance of feeling like you are helping patients without the stress of working in a clinical setting. I will share my experience deciding and then transitioning to a non-clinical career. I will describe my many roles as well as several other opportunities in these companies. A big part of my current role is working on the team that determines what medical interventions are covered under the plans we offer. I evaluate new technology and procedures, read the studies, meet with practicing physicians and then work with a team, including other medical directors, to determine what is in the best interest of our members/patients. As a physician in a relatively small company, I am involved in projects that involve quality, advocacy, utilization, and preventative care. Working at a not-for-profit managed health care plan can be interesting, challenging, and rewarding career alternative for physicians who are looking for opportunities to use their medical knowledge to make a difference on a population level.
