After experiencing burnout as a young primary care physician, Dr. Diane Shannon made the difficult decision to leave practice and pursue a career in writing. Her focus for 20 years has been drawing attention to ways to address clinician burnout, system inefficiency, and patient safety problems. She is co-author of the 2016 book, Preventing Physician Burnout: Curing the Chaos and Returning Joy to the Practice of Medicine. Dr. Shannon’s personal experience with burnout and her desire to support physicians motivated her to become a certified coach 5 years ago. She runs a coaching company for professional women who want a sustainable, balanced career. She helps clients improve their work-life balance, address imposter syndrome and self-doubt, identify and work towards personal and professional goals, and build careers that are satisfying and sustainable. In addition, she continues to advocate for professional wellness through writing and speaking. Dr. Shannon completed her coach training at the Gestalt International Study Center, earned her International Coach Federation credential as a Professional Certified Coach, and has more than 1,200 hours of 1:1 coaching under her belt. She received her medical degree from Thomas Jefferson University, and her master’s in public health from Harvard University. She completed training in an internal medicine residency program at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center and practiced primary care in Boston before transitioning to a career in health care writing and coaching. In her spare time, she enjoys conversing with her three young adult children, traveling with her architect husband, and learning how to surf.
