Lecture Details

Target Audience: This lecture is intended for anyone who takes care of other people, who wants to express trauma via the written word-- particularly fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction. I will incorporate the work of James Baldwin, Emily Dickinson, Amy Hempel, Pablo Picasso, and others.

Lecture Objectives:

  • 1. Explore the genres available to us for expressing trauma, both lived and witnessed, and think through how to choose one.
    2. Learn seven strategies for getting trauma onto the page, including "telling it slant", wish fulfillment, and magic realism/surrealism.
    3. Consider our ethical responsibility to the patients and others who catalyze these stories.
    4. Demonstrate venues to target for publishing this work.
