Lecture Details

I am senior acquisitions editor for health and wellness at Johns Hopkins University press with 20+ years experience in nonfiction book publishing for trade and general interest audiences. I'd like to discuss how writers can get started on book projects, from conception to proposal, submission, and beyond. I can speak to the process at Hopkins, but I have also worked with Rowman & Littlefield and academic-adjacent publishers, and I am knowledgeable about the process more generally in publishing. This talk would be for doctor and other healthcare professionals with an interest in writing books for a broad audience. Attendees will learn how to:

  1. Write a proposal
  2. Research appropriate publishers
  3. Pitch an agent and/or an editor
  4. Understand the process of review, contract offer, peer review (for university presses), and publication
  5. Help support their book's publication through their own platforms and networks

As more and more content proliferates through frictionless outlets, the need for well-vetted works is higher than ever. Writers, editors, and publishers are an important stopgap to misinformation and for spreading evidence-based health and wellness materials across all areas of health and wellness -- physical, mental, emotional, social, and sexual health are all important aspects to an overall healthy and happy life.
